Farm Share # 14 - September 6, 2018

This was a fun farm share.  Not only was it especially big and included some peak-of-harvest goodies like okra and edaname, we also entered a share in the Franklin County Fair.  AND we won first  prize for CSA shares!!  For the display we included some things that would have been harvested out of the pick-your-own garden this week like Tulsi basil and extra cherry tomatoes.  But, this share accurately reflected what the shares were like this week.

Farm Share # 13 - August 30, 2018

Full Share: sweet onions, scallions, hot peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, summer squash, broccolini, beans, greens (puntarelle, chard, or kale), herbs (apple mint in this share), and two choosing items - in this share they are leeks and a sweet pepper.

Here's a recipe that uses tomatoes, cucumbers, garlic, and scallions - Gazpacho!

It's great to plenty of vegetables to share with you all.  It's the season of variety and bounty.  Enjoy!!

Farm Share # 12 - August 23, 2018

Still not able to post pictures of the share.  We'll sort this out soon, I am sure!  In the meantime, here are some pictures of the new crops in this week's share:

Bulb fennel - This year's fennel is a lot more bulbous, a triumph!

Fresh soybeans or edaname.  Yum!

We have lots of tomatoes!  It feels great to have an abundance to share.
This week's share:

Fennel - 1 bulb
Leeks - 5
Sweetheart cabbage - 1 or 2 small
Squash - 2
Cucumbers - 2
Tomatoes - about 2 1/2 lb.
Hot peppers - 4
Sweet peppers - 1
Soybeans - 1 bundle
Greens - 1 bunch (kale or chard)
Choosing shelf - 1 choice (beans, squash, pickling cukes, tomatoes, hot peppers, broccolini, or beets)
Herbs - 1 bundle
Flowers
PYO Garden

Mini Shares: two items of the farm members choice, as usual.

HERBS:  We've been struggling a bit this year to provide the shares with herbs.  We have plenty of unusual and interesting herbs but have not had enough parsley, cilantro, and dill.  Plus we wanted to try having cutting celery and chervil but they haven't grown very well so far.  More nice dill is on its way and hopefully there will a better supply of parsley as well.  Since every time we have trouble with something, the next year we do a great job of growing that item (primarily through attention and determination), my prediction is that in 2019 the farm will have lots and lots of parsley and cilantro all season long!  Just saying.

Farm Share # 11 - August 16, 2018

Farm Share # 9, August 2, 2018

Today's Share: hot peppers, escarole, choice of kale or chard, summer squash, cucumbers, beans, basil, beets, carrots, green garlic, salad mix, herbs (garlic chives in this share), two choosing items (snow peas and broccolini in this sample), and one tomato
Plus we had some fun new items!

Gladioli

Green garlic -
garlic that has not been cured for storage and is extra juicy and fresh.

Heirloom squash from Argentina, Zappallo de Tronco

First tomatoes in the shares, Red Racer

Both this week and last week not all the escarole was taken.  I know it's a matter of personal taste but I'll try to post some recipes for using it.  Basically, escarole is in the chicory family, like dandelion or radicchio.  It can be cooked or used as a salad green.  For starters, check out our recipe blog post about salads without lettuce.  The recipe blog is a great spot to look for ideas for using your share since its focus is on the vegetables that we like to grow and eat here at Sweet Morning Farm.  Explore, expand, enjoy!

Farm Share # 2 - June 14, 2018

Second Farm Share:  Still mostly salad and greens.  Most shares also got rhubarb but the one in the picture was for someone with an allergy so we gave them extra greens.  Chard, kale, head lettuce, spinach, salad mix, peppermint, salad turnips.  And flowers!

Mixed bouquet: Painted Ladies, Sweet William, snapdragons, Lady's Mantle

Most folks know what to do with their salad greens and cooking greens.  We enjoy cooking a bunch of mixed greens (kale, chard, mustard, etc.) and having cooked greens ready to eat in the refrigerator.  We use them with eggs and cheese for breakfast or as an easy side dish for supper.  They are also handy for making quiche or a frittata or a casserole.

Turnip tops and radish tops are edible, delicious and full of vitamins and minerals.  They can be a bit prickly when raw but become tender and tasty when cooked.

In a few weeks we'll start picking the flower buds of the garlic plants.  They are called scapes and taste like garlic.  Use them like scallions, chop and add to eggs or soup or stir-fry, or make Garlic Scape Pesto.  You can eat that now or put in the freezer for the winter.  More ideas for garlic scapes can be found by searching Sweet Morning Farm's recipe blog

We hope you are enjoying your farm share and if you have questions or ideas to share, please get in touch or leave a comment. sweetmorningfarm@gmail.com

2017 Farm Shares in Review

(We kind of dropped the ball on posting about the shares in 2017.  Sorry about that.  We were busy growing food, going to market, and working on some larger projects like improving our water supply for irrigation, planning and creating some new growing spaces, and updating our 10-year forestry plan and making plans for a timber cut, and visiting our newest family member!)

Here are pictures from most of the farm shares last year.  You can see that the size varies through the season but you always get a nice assortment of veggies and flowers.  Each week farm members get a basic portion of the harvest and get to choose some items according to their preferences.  Mini Share folks choose two items per week from an array of choices.  Everyone can have flowers as well!

We really like growing and sharing vegetables, fruits, and flowers with our farm members.  We really like sharing the farm, the growing process and our animals, and making friends.
Looking forward to 2018! - Laura & Robin
